When (exactly) does negative information fall off of your credit report?

It%26#039;s widely known that negative information falls off of your credit report after 7 years, BUT is it 7 years from the %26quot;Date of Status%26quot;? OR 7 yrs. from %26quot;Last Report%26quot; date? Thanks for your help!

When (exactly) does negative information fall off of your credit report?

The correct answer is 7 years from the date of the first delinquency.

For example, lets say you have a credit card bill due 1/1/01 and you did not pay that bill. You never made any payments from that date. THAT is the delinquency date. So on 1/1/08 this debt must be deleted from your credit report.

NOTE to those who answer this....it is NOT 7 1/2 years, please read the law below with the supporting links.

605(c)(1) and 605(a)(4)

搂 605. Requirements relating to information contained in consumer reports [15 U.S.C. 搂 1681c]

(a) Information excluded from consumer reports. Except as authorized under subsection (b) of this section, no consumer reporting agency may make any consumer report containing any of the following items of information:

(4) Accounts placed for collection or charged to profit and loss which antedate the report by more than seven years.(1)

(c) Running of reporting period.

(1) In general. The 7-year period referred to in paragraphs (4) and (6)(2) of subsection (a) shall begin, with respect to any delinquent account that is placed for collection (internally or by referral to a third party, whichever is earlier), charged to profit and loss, or subjected to any similar action, upon the expiration of the 180-day period beginning on the date of the commencement of the delinquency which immediately preceded the collection activity, charge to profit and loss, or similar action.

When (exactly) does negative information fall off of your credit report?

S/B 7 from date of status, but the law recently changed. Some are now 10 years, I can%26#039;t actually remember which, possibly bankruptcy since those laws changed last year or the year before.

You can request any item be removed by challenging an item on your report. They will respond that they removed it, or they didn%26#039;t and why.
