What forms do you send to the credit bureaus to dispute something on your credit report??

my husband filed for bankruptcy about three years ago. no big deal his credit is good right now. however there is an account that has been %26#039;settled%26#039; due to the bankruptcy but on his last credit report it said that it was still %26#039;open%26#039;. we have all the forms we need to send in the appeal but i am a little unclear as to which paperwork from the bankruptcy, needs to be sent in as well for proof of the settled account. i know it sounds a little confusing but hopefully someone has an answer for me. a little direction even would be great. thank you so much :)

You need to understand how the dispute %26quot;game%26quot; is played.

When you dispute an item with the credit bureau, all they are required to do is contact the creditor and %26quot;verify%26quot; the info is correct. If they respond that it%26#039;s correct, the item stays as-is. No real investigation ever takes place.

Here is what I would do...

1) The form is fairly basic, and can be in letter form. Just state you are disputing the item, give whatever details you can to show why it%26#039;s wrong. You can send all that other nonsense to show it%26#039;s settled but rarely will it help your case.

2) Send a letter to the creditor/collection agency and inform they they are listing inaccurate information to your credit report. If it%26#039;s not corrected in 30 days, you can sue them for $1000 in small claims court.

You will find a hammer works much better then a carrot when dealing with creditors.

if it was a chapter 7, then just send in the bankrupt notification. If it was a chapter 13, then you will need to send in whatever was sent to you indicating your obligation to that particular compnay and that it has been paid and settled.

Even though you settled that debt, it will be on your credit report for 10 years from the time you filed. There is nothing you can do to get that off until it falls off, anyone you apply for credit with will see it; however if it shows paid and settled, most creditors will bypass that.
