Is $75.00 to much for a credit report for a apartment rental?

A family member of mine is looking for a new rental and found a place but they wanted $75.00 each person to get a credit report before they rent the place. I usually heard maybe $25.00-$50.00(the highest) for a report. What do you think?

If you need a copy of your credit report you can get it free at annualcreditreport.com. What they are asking for is an application fee, and they can pretty much charge whatever they want. If you think you will be approved go for it. If not then I suggest you look elsewhere.

I think whoever is charging 75 bucks for a credit report should be shot dead where they stand. Credit reports cost $9 dollars from any credit vendor.

Its horrible but the law allows them to ask for that. Its funny you bring this up as I was talking to my mom and dad about this the other day and said they need to come up with a law where you don%26#039;t have to do that. I know of one company below that will rent you a house without you having to put in multiple apps. They work with bad credit folks too and I%26#039;ve personally seen them place a lot of folks into homes.

They only serve southern california though.

no

Yes, your relative is getting ripped off, but if he/she really likes the place and/or housing stock is tight (like it is here in New York), your relative is going to just have to suck it up and pay. I offered to run a credit report on my own and fax it to my now-landlord, but the mgmt company insisted that they had to do it themselves - for $100. It sucks, but you do what you have to.

Yes, that is way too much for a credit check. But I HAVE heard that higher end buildings feel they can charge this for a home with all the amenties. It%26#039;s a load of crap!

you can get one free off net, however a good landlord will check, other rental history, employment, check writing history, criminal in addition to credit. even though you bring them your credit check they might check it anyway.

$75 is a little high for apartment complex, but some residential landlords charge up to $100

Way to much. I use rental applications for my rental and the charge is $5. (non-refundable) That is only so a landlord can check credit history. You can produce your own credit report for free.
