Are overdue library books factored into your credit report?

I know this sounds stupid, but I just got my free credit report and there%26#039;s $50 that%26#039;s way past due and %26quot;in collections/attorney%26quot; and the date was way before I even got my first credit card. The only thing I can think of for that amount were some overdue library books from a few years ago. How am I supposed to pay it if I don%26#039;t know where it%26#039;s from and I%26#039;ve never been contacted to collect the $?

Yes, libraries can now report to your credit report.

They usually ask for your SSN, and now, after a certain amount of time (90 days with Los Angeles Public Library) They can write the debt off, and send it to an outside collections agency, denoting your credit report with such information.

Yup they can and will report you for not returning books. People/business don%26#039;t need your ss# all the time to report a collection that is why people with similar names often have errors on their credit report.

I think it shouldn%26#039;t but you%26#039;ll never know. Some people wouldn%26#039;t do harm to other for some little thing like that but some wouldn%26#039;t care. I wonder, if you can find out what is it for and try to work it out. Yes, you can say that nobody have ever tried to contact you or collect any money from you, you don%26#039;t even know what is it for...let those free credit report find that out for you. Well, I think they usually will tell you what is it about in your report. They can%26#039;t just said you owed such and such without an evidence.

Your credit report should list the creditors name and address. Send them a certified letter requesting %26quot;Verification of Debt%26quot; This will tell you who and what the debt is for.

You can get a sample letter by visiting the following Yahoo Group http://finance.groups.yahoo.com/group/do...

Hope this is of help.

Yes, overdue library fines can be reported on the credit file if the library sends your account to a collection agency. I have seen them show up on the bureau.

On your credit report they should have the agency name that is reporting the debt. If they don%26#039;t dispute it with the credit bureau to get more information. If you still don%26#039;t get anywhere, put a statement of explanation on your file. Creditors are not obligated to pay attention to those notes, but some do and with such a small dollar amount, they may be more willing to overlook it when you apply for credit in the future.
