Question on how to deal with a problem on credit report?

I just pulled a copy of my credit report and noticed that there was a collection account on there from AFNI/Verizon. The date is listed as 12/06. I have not had any type of Verizon account since I moved from Pennsylvania to Maryland in 2004. I never received anything indicating that I owed any money to Verizon and in going back over my records have a receipt for a final bill that I paid after I moved. What is the best way to go about disputing something that is already on your credit report?

Question on how to deal with a problem on credit report?

Tell the consumer reporting company, in writing, what information you think is inaccurate. Include copies (NOT originals) of documents that support your position. Your letter should clearly identify each item in your report you dispute, state the facts and explain why you dispute the information, and request that it be removed or corrected. You may want to enclose a copy of your report with the items in question circled. Send your letter by certified mail, 閳ユ笧eturn receipt requested,閳?so you can document what the consumer reporting company received. Keep copies of your dispute letter and enclosures.

Consumer reporting companies must investigate the items in question閳ユ敆sually within 30 days閳ユ敆nless they consider your dispute frivolous. They also must forward all the relevant data you provide about the inaccuracy to the original creditor that provided the information. After the original creditor receives notice of a dispute from the consumer reporting company, it must investigate, review the relevant information, and report the results back to the consumer reporting company. If the original creditor finds the disputed information is inaccurate, it must notify all three nationwide consumer reporting companies so they can correct the information in your file.

When the investigation is complete, the consumer reporting company must give you the results in writing and a free copy of your report if the dispute results in a change. This free report does not count as your annual free report. The consumer reporting company also must send you written notice that includes the name, address, and phone number of the creditor.

If you ask, the consumer reporting company must send notices of any corrections to anyone who received your report in the past six months. You can have a corrected copy of your report sent to anyone who received a copy during the past two years for employment purposes.

If an investigation doesn閳ユ獩 resolve your dispute with the consumer reporting company, you can ask that a statement of the dispute be included in your file and in future reports. You also can ask the consumer reporting company to provide your statement to anyone who received a copy of your report in the recent past. You can expect to pay a fee for this service.

Step Two

Tell the creditor in writing, that you dispute an item. Be sure to include copies (NOT originals) of documents that support your position. If the creditor reports the item to a consumer reporting company, it must include a notice of your dispute. And if you are correct閳ユ敄hat is, if the information is found to be inaccurate閳ユ敄he information provider may not report it again.

Hope this is of help.

you must write a letter of explanation to each of the credit bureaus, transunion, experian, equifax, and beacon, address are available on the web. send them copies of your final bill and receipt. verizon will have 30 days to either prove you owe them money or they will have to remove it. if the amount is substanial they will respond, normally if its a small amount they will not spend the dollars for research, and the credit bureaus will remove it with no response. send all copies certified return receipt requested to each bureau and keep copies of your letters. follow up in about 60 days to see if it has been removed or if you get a response showing you do indeed owe the bill. yes its a pain in the a--, but it is your responsbility to handle this and pay for the certified mail, not correcting it will only hurt your credit and cause problems in the future. gl

Dispute it with the credit bureau%26#039;s as %26quot;not mine%26quot;, if it is listed on all 3 (Equifax, Experian, TransUnion) you will have to dispute it with all 3 separately. They will ask the creditor to verify the accuracy of the information. If they cannot verify within 30 days it will get deleted. If they do verify it you must then dispute it with the creditor. First try to contact Verizon, there should be a number listed on your report, if it is something they overlooked....easy fix. Otherwise, fill out a CDV form (Consumer Dispute Verification Form) and turn it in to the credit bureaus. Verizon will then have 60 days to either take it off your report or to verify with what is owed. Sounds like a lot of work but really quite easy because if they go past that 60 day window, it%26#039;s off your report!
